The Troy softball team is off to a spectacular 8-1 start this season, its best under head coach Eric Newell and the best start since beginning 8-1 in 2022. The Trojans entered the D1 Softball Mid-Major Rankings at No. 20 on Monday.  While the team’s offense has been electric – leading the Sun Belt Conference with 77 runs and scoring 8.56 per game – Troy’s pitching has put on a show. Troy men’s basketball stumbled last week with back-to-back road losses to Southern Miss and Texas State, falling 69-65 and 74-62, respectively.  The Trojans had seemingly righted the ship with two consecutive wins in the week prior, but the momentum came to a halt in the 74-62 loss to Texas State on Wednesday night.  The Bobcats pounced to an early lead, 16-8 after the first eight minutes of play. The Troy track and field team continued its incredible streak of record-breaking meets this season while in Nashville, Tennessee, last weekend during the Music City Challenge. Troy men’s golf closed out its first match of the spring on Tuesday at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.  Houston played host to the tournament and earned the win out of 13 teams competing. Troy finished in 11th, beating Sam Houston and Wright State. Other teams included Tarleton State, North Texas, Illinois State and others including Sun Belt foe Louisiana. Last weekend, the Cardinal Clash ensued. Central Arkansas, IU Indy and Radford challenged the Trojans, and when the dust settled, the Trojans came out undefeated.  The Trojans took down Central Arkansas 8-0, beat IU Indy 11-3 and 8-0 and scraped by Radford in dramatic 2-1 walk-off fashion in the ninth inning. For the first time since 2021, the Super Bowl featured a man who once donned the Power T thanks to New England’s Dell Pettus.  Though the Patriots fell short in the big game, Pettus recorded two tackles against the Seattle Seahawks. After being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Pettus recorded at least one tackle in each of the team’s four playoff games. Troy softball dominated in the Trojan Classic this past weekend, and one of the players who led the team in its four wins was Makaley Boswell.  A junior utility player out of Geneva, Alabama, Boswell hit an even .500 on 14 plate appearances with a 1.597 OPS. In recent weeks, Troy women’s tennis has had some success and part of it has come from Leena Metwally.  A junior from Cairo, Egypt, Metwally stands at 5-1 in overall play and 3-0 in singles play. She has defeated opponents with an average set score of 5.7-2.4 so far in 2026.  Metwally has vastly improved compared to the fall 2025 season. The Troy Trojans men’s and women’s basketball teams will be participating in the second round of the SBC-MAC Challenge this upcoming Saturday, Feb. 7. Troy looks to remain undefeated in the challenge after the men’s team took down Kent State on the road, and the women’s team annihilated Toledo at Trojan Arena in November.  The SBC-MAC Challenge consists of 13 men’s and women’s teams from both the Sun Belt and Mid-Atlantic conferences.
