Trojans take down Omaha in Trojan Invitational to earn Softball America recognition
Question. If you were the Troy softball team, what number letter in the alphabet is the letter W?
The 12-2 team would respond with “23” 12 times.
This past week, four challengers faced the now No. 10 ranked Mid-Major Troy Softball team. Alabama State, Furman, Nicholls, and D1 Softball Mid-Major No. 1 Omaha all came to the Wiregrass to take on the Trojans. Only one team left with a win over Troy, and it wasn’t Omaha.
It all started on Wednesday, when Alabama State rolled into town. Esmee Ames was not shaken -- she remained calm and took to the circle. She pitched four innings, only allowing two hits and striking out seven. Blow number one.
Kiley Huffman approached home plate and does what she does best, blast softballs. She obliterated two RBI doubles and an RBI single, going 3-for-3. Kalee Rochinski smacked a single and brought home a runner. Blow number two.
Three Trojans reached base ahead of a Boswell triple to increase the lead to 6-1. Lydia Kirby walked, Sophia Jenkins said hello’ to Alabama State with a double of her own and Kam Munson blasted a three-run homer to end it at 10-1 Trojans.
Blow three. Hornets out.
Next on the chopping block was Furman. Ella Cunnigham was the woman of the hour when she stepped into the circle to deliver something special to Trojan fans -- a no-hitter. She struck out 10 in the first Troy no-no since March of 2025. Blow one.
Dailynn Motes kept the offensive momentum churning with three RBIs off a double and a single. Cunningham ripped an RBI single, helping her own cause from the dish. Blow two.
Amity White smoked a single to bring home two more Trojans, and Loftis returned the favor by bringing White home. Furman would score two of their own, but by that point, Troy had the game under wraps. A fielder's choice ended the no-no and sealed an 11-2 Troy win. Blow three. Run rule win number nine.
Every great story has a tragedy. This one is no different as Nicholls walked into Troy and took down the Trojans 6-5.
Nicholls would get the best of the Trojans with a 6-1 score going into the seventh inning, barely withstanding a late rally. A three-run homer off the bat of Munson helped cut the deficit, and the Trojans loaded the bases up with two outs. However, the Colonels were able to get the last out and hand Troy a loss.
Then came Omaha. The top Mid-Major team entered the Troy Softball Complex hoping to get a win and continue its undefeated season.
The Mavericks did not win.
Abby Lovell was electric, throwing a shutout against the nationally sixth-ranked scoring offense. Ella Cunningham hit a single before Dailynn Motes obliterated a homer in the sixth inning to get the Trojans on the board. Lovell stranded two in the seventh to win it for the Trojans 2-0.
Furman faced Troy again and fell 12-4 on a windy Sunday afternoon, as the Trojans swatted three home runs.
The offense got a quick start with McKinnon Howard laying down a bunt single to get on base, and Boswell lined a two-run homer to left-center field. The Paladins tied it back up, but Kalee Rochinski hit a homer to center field. The Trojans offense exploded in the middle innings to take a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth.
Furman hit a two-run home run in the fifth, but Boswell stepped up and brought home two with her fifth and sixth RBIs of the game.
The Trojans take on Auburn on Thursday, USC Upstate and Auburn on Friday and No.11 Virginia Tech on Saturday in Auburn, Alabama. They also take on Georgia Tech on the road Tuesday to cap off a challenging week.
