Troy’s Frequency Choir put on a powerful and emotional concert at the Johnson Center for the Arts on Monday. The theme, “Love Notes,” featured a mix of genres including jazz, Broadway and pop, giving the audience a little bit of everything while tying it all together through the idea of love and connection.
“I think it embodies the love of music and the connection we can all have with it,” said Avery Foster, a freshman biomedical science major from Albertville, Alabama. “Music brings out a lot of emotions, and this concert focused on the emotion of love and that deep feeling you get when you listen to music.”
The medley of songs and voices brought tears to the crowd’s eyes, showing just how strong that connection was. For many in the audience, it wasn’t just about hearing the music but actually feeling it.
“Music is powerful, and it touches everyone differently, so I’m glad someone was moved and that it made a difference for them.,” said Amelia Wells, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Prattville, Alabama. “With Frequency, you have to be in tune with the people singing with you and watch each other closely.
“It’s different from other ensembles. There was no conductor. It’s all about feeling the music and moving as one.”
Another meaningful part of the night was a dedication that added even more emotion to the performance. The group took time to recognize someone who has been a part of the program and is now facing a difficult situation.
Amy Griffin is the choral director at Houston Academy in Dothan, Alabama, and a former member of the group. Griffin is battling ovarian cancer.
“We’ve worked together for years,” said five-year Assistant Professor of Music Education, Assistant Director of the School of Music and Choir Director Dr. Scott Sexton. “She’s currently battling ovarian cancer, so we wore teal ribbons to support her.
“Our singers did their job. It’s not just about hearing music; it’s about making the audience feel it.”
Overall, the concert showed how music can bring people together and create a shared experience, even for just one night.
