Joe Lott is a redshirt freshman safety for the Troy Trojans and a homegrown Alabama talent. Lott is a versatile player whose impact can’t just be seen on the stat sheet -- it goes way beyond that. His performance on Saturday against ULM proved exactly that.
Lott completed a 53-yard pick six on his second interception of the night. The pick was the dagger that sealed the game for the Trojans, producing the momentum necessary to turn a close 17-14 lead into an eventual 37-14 win on the road.
"It was kind of surreal, going back to my first interception in high school and now doing it here at college,” Lott said to Troy Athletics.
Lott’s two interceptions were pillars in a defensive masterclass by the Trojans that forced four second-half turnovers against ULM. Lott used his versatility on defense to read passes perfectly and used his experience running track and field in high school to torch everyone and run to the endzone.
Lott is the first Trojans since Reddy Stewart in 2022 to record multiple interceptions along with a touchdown in a game. He executed the play like a running back, finding open space and never looking back.
Lott showed his potential during his high school career at UMS Wright Prep School in Mobile, Alabama. He was a talented two-way player, playing wide receiver, QBquarterback and defensive back
He ended up getting 2,000 all-purpose yards and landing 20 touchdowns on offense. When he played defense, he was just as fierce, hitting 200 tackles and 10 interceptions.
Lott was even first team all-state his junior and senior years, leading his team to a 38-3 record in his time there.
He arrived to college as a three-star multi-position athlete, and now plays safety for the Trojans. His previous experience at positions like quarterback gave him the unique ability to read throws and anticipate offenses.
As a freshman last season, Lott redshirted but logged five tackles in four games. He’s parlayed that experience into an impact role in Troy’s defense in 2025.
The victory at ULM cemented him as a strong player that can only get better. He’s a playmaker that doesn’t just prevent points, but actively creates them. Lott is a capable player with the valuable ability to flip the outcome of a game with a single snap.
