ALBUM REVIEW With Jimmy Nichols: Bruno Mars 'The Romantic' — A return to glory
When talking about some of the best artists of the 21 st century, it is easy for people to mention Beyoncé, Adele, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and other fan favorites. However, one artist who seems to be underrated by music lovers is Bruno Mars. Bruno debuted in 2010 with his album “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” and showed his caliber as an artist immediately. Songs like “Grenade,” “Count on Me,” “The Lazy Song,” “Talking to the Moon,” “Just the Way You Are” and “Marry You” went

Building songs with squelch
“Gantz Graf” as an EP is sort of an anomaly. The EP was released after their album “Confield,” one of their more intricate works in terms of drum programming and came out before albums like “Draft 7.30” and “Untilted.” The main thing that sets it apart from other EPs by the duo, though, is the fact that it’s mostly extremely abrasive. If you get used to it, it’s an amazing listen, but in general, it’s very abrasive. The EP opens up with “Gantz Graf,” which slaps you in the

Brent Faiyaz makes more waves
Brent Faiyaz, whose real name is Christopher Brent Wood, is making waves again with his latest album, "Icon," released on Feb. 13. Known for his emotionally honest style, Faiyaz continues to explore love, heartbreak, self-growth and vulnerability while prioritizing artistic integrity over chart-topping hits. Many fans and critics consider "Icon" among his most meaningful projects to date. Instead of following trends or relying heavily on featured artists, Faiyaz foc

The 'bum delirious: The review of Don Toliver's OCTANE
Don Toliver is what some may call an acquired taste but consider me convinced. I’ve been a pseudo-fan of Toliver since the Covid era, when he first started getting popular with the release of “No Idea” and various other songs from the “Heaven or Hell” album. Toliver has been slowly growing in fame since his TikTok blastoff, releasing several albums since 2020. Some of his biggest hits include “NEW DROP,” “No Pole” and “After Party.” His most recent album, however, “OCTANE,

Whitechapel bathes my ears with good, good gravel
Usually, I’m not the biggest metal listener, especially not the type of metal Whitechapel is, but a friend of mine recommended this album to me, and I was interested enough to give it a spin. The album has a tendency of bathing my ears in gravelly guitar sound throughout, which is great. That’s not to say that it doesn’thave melodic parts, though. The melodic parts of the album shine through in the breakdowns of certain songs and meld with the gravelly sounding guitar reall

"Painting With:" A 2016 Album worth revisiting
Since many people (including myself) have declared 2026 as the new 2016, I thought it would be appropriate to share my thoughts on an album that came out in 2016 that people weren’t the biggest fans of. That album would be “Painting With” by Animal Collective. I firmly believe Animal Collective are legends in the indie circuit, as their output from the 2000s is nothing short of wonderful. Their albums from “Sung Tongs” to “Centipede Hz” are all exceptional releases, but whil

What do people think of Bruno's new music
"In Pop News This Week" It has been nearly 10 years since Bruno Mars released a single album and nearly five years since he released an album with Silk Sonic. With the release of his new song “I Just Might” and announcement of his new album “The Romantic,” fans across campus are excited to hear what Mars has in store for his fans. “When Bruno announced his new album, there were actual screams,” said Kayla Burrell, a junior exercise physiology major from Marbury, Alabama. “I

ALBUM REVIEW: 'California Nebula' by Default
To fully understand the intricate beauty of Chinese shoegaze band Default’s album titled “California Nebula,” you simply need to understand the history of the shoegaze genre. One does not need to understand Mandarin in order to understand the scope and message of the album. Believed to have emerged from the United Kingdom’s underground psychedelic rock sound, shoegaze has become a defining genre in mainstream music. The term “shoegaze” refers to band members gazing at the

2025 ended on a sour chord, mostly
2025s catalogue of music was disappointing. I recall weeks of the summer spent feeling like there was something good waiting just around the corner, only to poke my head out and repeatedly find nothing. Ironically, in their stead, I found myself listening to droves upon droves of tracks released the year prior, and the one before that. Songs that within months became soundtracks to swathes of my time had, in fact, found their first air before the calendar turned 25. Album

Squarepusher’s new EP “Stereotype” is anything but
When I think about Squarepusher, I usually associate him with being one of the pioneering acts of the frantic and intricately programmed electronic music subgenre drill and bass. When I think about Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) from the early 90s, I think about ambient sounding tracks and slow, but mellow and dark house or techno music. Squarepusher has been making drill and bass since the mid 90s. In my opinion, he is a great example of the jazzier side of the subgenre. Hi

Spooky Song Review: Halloween by Sonic Youth
There are some Halloween song staples that are constantly played during October. Songs such as “The Monster Mash” and “Ghostbusters” get their time in the spotlight, but there are also some spooky songs that are overlooked throughout the season. One of the songs that I feel is overlooked in the Halloween music canon is the song “Halloween” by Sonic Youth. “Halloween” is a song that appeared initially as a bonus track on the CD edition of the band’s third album, “Bad Moon Ris

Death Grips' "Ex Military" still holds up, 14 years later
After nearly a decade and a half of being kept off streaming services, Death Grips’ debut mixtape makes a triumphant return to the limelight of the experimental hip-hop scene. But do the unorthodox samples, cryptic lyrics and oppressive soundscapes still hold up in 2025? For some background, Death Grips is an experimental hip-hop trio from Sacramento, California. The group consists of Zach Hill on drums, MC Ride on vocals and Flatlander on keyboard. The three work collaborat
