Building songs with squelch
“Gantz Graf” as an EP is sort of an anomaly. The EP was released after their album “Confield,” one of their more intricate works in terms of drum programming and came out before albums like “Draft 7.30” and “Untilted.” The main thing that sets it apart from other EPs by the duo, though, is the fact that it’s mostly extremely abrasive. If you get used to it, it’s an amazing listen, but in general, it’s very abrasive. The EP opens up with “Gantz Graf,” which slaps you in the

The inaction of our government is a slap in face
According to a CNN article entitled “DOJ releases millions of pages of documents in Epstein investigation,” over three million pages of documents related to the known sexual predator Jeffery Epstein were released Jan. 30. https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/epstein-files-release-doj-01-30-26 What is most disturbing about the newest release of the Epstein files is not the fact there is one evil man, Jeffery Epstein, who trafficked, raped, and assaulted in other ways

Autechre for hours and hours
If you couldn’t tell, I am a big fan of electronic music. This was partially due to my discovery of Autechre while in high school. To me, Autechre is singular and unique while also being a great break into electronic music. Without Autechre, I don’t know if I would be as interested in electronic music as I am today. If Autechre’s albums are giant, satisfying meals, their EPs are appetizers. Some of their best works are in these bite-sized EP packages I can’t help but snack o

Emma's Enlightenments: Stay unapologetically you
This Week’s Advice: Stay Unapologetically You. I, like so many others, care so much about what others think about me. Every night before bed, I wonder if I did good enough during the day I had. I wince at the mistakes I made and beat myself up over what I could have done better. Embarrassment and shame are my worst fears, ever. Even in class, I am hesitant to drink my coffee a certain way or check the time another. This isn’t healthy, but it’s not abnormal. We, as people

Anais' Annotations: "You'd Be Home Now" by Kathleen Glasgow
Young adult fiction among adult readers is something of a controversy on today’s internet. Some argue the less mature plots and reduced vocabulary are damaging to readers and writers who should’ve advanced to more serious genres. While I am the first person to admit that YA fiction is rarely up my alley, I was surprised by Kathleen Glasgow’s “You’d Be Home Now” (2021). I was skeptical about reading it when it was first recommended to me, but I found this work to stand out e

SPOILER ALERT with Jimmy Nichols: It's time to bring back the Muppets, for real
Growing up, I loved watching the Muppets. My family owned the DVD for the 2011 “Muppets” movie, which focused on Walter and the other Muppets trying to save the studio. I then watched in theaters “Muppets: Most Wanted.” Once Disney+ was launched, I started watching older movies like the 1979 “Muppets” movie and “A Muppets Christmas Carol.” I have watched some of the full shows and plenty of clips from “The Muppet Show” that ran as a variety show in the 70s. This group of pu

Recipe of the Week: Jordan's Southern Style Tea Cakes
With the continued winter settling in, nothing helps me settle down more than a warm pastry. Paired with some vanilla ice cream or a mug of warm chai, these tea cakes will either have you jumping for joy or hiding under your bed so you don’t have to share. As opposed to regular cake, these are easy to prepare and ready to serve right out of the oven (if you like them hot). Ingredients: 4 cups of all-purpose flour 2 sticks unsalted butter 2 to 2 ½ cups of granulated su

Troy holds 12th annual guitar festival
Music filled HAL and Smith Halls last Friday during Troy’s annual guitar festival, the only one of its kind in Alabama. While it’s an art that often goes unrecognized throughout the state and the university, classical guitar had its chance to shine at the annual guitar festival. The festival serves as a day of appreciation for education about guitars and guitar music. The festival began in the morning last Friday with a series of concerts in HAL Hall, featuring performers li
