Troy’s Department of Dance is set to hold Art in Motion: An Exhibit of Soul, in the Trojan Center Theatre Feb. 26-28 at 7 p.m. and March 1 at 2 p.m.

The production is a completely student-led dance production put on every year by the junior class. It begins in the class “Writing for Dance.”

“I cannot stress how much of an amazing opportunity this is for students,” said Mikiya Smith, a junior dance major from North Little Rock, Arkansas. “You get placed in a position where you really have to figure out everything on your own, which I think is a great challenge to experience."

Students get to test their skills and leadership while taking part in putting together the show. These students also learn the importance of teamwork throughout the production process.

“I love getting to uplift my peers in any way that I can, and it was also nice to put my leadership skills to the test,” Smith said.

The show is one of two the dance department gets to put on each year and is a way the students can express themselves. While most of the expression will come through the dances within the performances, it will also be relayed through the variety of instrumental music played throughout the show.

“I’m really not much of a talker, and I find it extremely difficult to express myself with words,” Smith said. “Dance has always been a way for me to express myself through movement rather than trying to figure out how to articulate whatever I may be feeling with words.”

The production is aimed at personal expression of the soul through movement.

“I hope that people are moved, inspired, and hopefully relate to some of the pieces in the production,” Smith said. “I also encourage the audience to become curious about their soul, what fulfils them and how they can connect with others in a soulful way.”

Students, faculty, staff and members of the Troy community are invited to attend the performance. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased by following the link in the bio of@troytheatreance on Instagram.
