The Pre-Vet Club at Troy is bringing back a fan-favorite event with a new twist.

“Smooches for Pooches” will take place on March 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the John Robert Lewis Quad and will raise money for She Saves Animal Rescue of Alabama, a Montgomery, Alabama, -based rescue organization dedicated to saving and rehoming dogs in need.

Madison Corkran, president of the Pre-Vet Club and a junior biomedical sciences major from Montgomery, Alabama, said the event is especially meaningful because of her personal connection to the rescue center.

“The purpose of our event is to raise money for a local rescue I work with called She Saves Animal Rescue of Alabama,” Corkran said. “We also want to help bring awareness to their mission and showcase some of their adoptable dogs and puppies.”

The Pre-Vet Club serves undergraduate students interested in pursuing veterinary school after graduation. The club features volunteer work, service projects and hands-on experiences to bolster their professional skills and make a positive impact on animals.

The idea for the event came after Corkran spoke with club advisor Janet Gaston about potential service opportunities.

“She told me about an event the club used to host called Smooches for Pooches,” Corkran explained. “We wanted to bring it back but add our own twist, including a puppy kissing booth.”

This year’s event will give students the opportunity to interact with rescue dogs while supporting a meaningful cause. In addition to raising funds, the club hopes the event will introduce more people to the work being done by local rescues and inspire others to get involved.

“This event is important because it allows us to gain exposure on campus while supporting a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts,” Corkran said.

Above all, the Pre-Vet Club hopes the public understands what drives their organization.

“We are an organization on campus built on service and the drive to save any animals we can whether that be through rescue or volunteer work” Cockran said.

Students, faculty and Troy community members are encouraged to stop by, meet adoptable puppies and support the Pre-Vet Club’s mission.
