Women's tennis goes 1-1 on road in two Florida matches

Troy women’s tennis returned from a late week trip to Florida 4-2 after matches with Florida A&M and Florida. They defeated the Rattlers 6-1 on Thursday before being swept by the No. 24 ranked Gators on Friday – ending their four-match win streak.  


The Trojans suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Florida in what marks their second loss of the spring season. The duo of ValeriiaAvdeeva and Maria Guirguis won two games before being defeated by the Florida duo of No. 22 Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova, 6-2– marking the duo’s first loss of the spring season. The same can be said for Alexia Zarate and Leena Metwally before their match was abandoned, 5-2. 


In singles action, the Trojans mirrored similar sentiments. Leena Metwally was locked in a battle with No. 20 Gabia Paskauskas that was unfinished, 6-4, 0-1. Maria Guirguis’ match with No. 48 Valery Gynina was abandoned with the score standing, 6-2, 5-4. 


Staying with singles action, Sama Hindawy was overpowered by No. 88 Xinyi Nong, 6-2, 6-0. Emilia Namyslo was defeated by No. 99 Nikola Daubnerova, 6-2, 6-1.  


Prior to facing the Gators, Troy defeated Florida A&M 6-1. Troy’s only loss in this match came in a singles match that was retired.  


In this match Troy took all three doubles matches, 6-1. The duo of Avdeeva and Guirguis moved their record to 4-0 in their victory over Florida A&M’s Veronica Rodriguez and Sydney Brantley. The teams of Hiba Heni and Namyslo and Metwally and Zarate also claimed victory in their respective matches.  


Singles action was highlighted by every Trojan who played their match out winning in straight sets – Metwally was defeated via retirement with her match standing 6-2, 4-4.


Alexia Zarate claimed victory over Alyynah Thomas via tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (1).  


The Trojans look to bounce back on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they welcome the Kennesaw State Owls to the Lunsford Tennis Complex. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m.


Troy is set to begin a three-match homestand lasting until Feb. 28 – it will also battle with the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Mercer Bears.
