Over a two-day span, the Troy women’s tennis team competed with conference foes and Power Four opponents alike to claim victory at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. Each day consisted of three rounds of both singles and doubles action.
While there was success for the Trojans on both fronts, there were some hiccups. Overall, the team went 13-8 in singles play and 4-8 in doubles action. Troy was held under five points in all but one of their doubles losses.
“The Roberta Alison is a great tournament that we play every year -- there will be plenty of opportunities to compete against the best teams in our region,” said head coach Rawia Elsisi. “This is the type of competition that we are looking for to end our fall season.”
On day two, Maria Guirguis battled in three sets with South Alabama’s Rio Maeda. Maeda took set one 6-2 but dropped the subsequent sets, 7-5 and 6-3.
Veena Nazar also claimed victory in her round three matchup. Nazar took Georgia State’s Mia Petrovic to three sets. After dropping set one 6-2, Nazar toppled Petrovic in sets two and three, 6-2 followed by 6-1.
In round three of doubles play, Valeriia Avdeeva teamed with Guirguis to take down the Georgia Tech duo of Given Roach and Olivia Carneiro, 6-2. Troy went 1-3 in the third round of doubles play.
Turning to day one action, Guirguis set the tone for the tournament by defeating Mississippi State’s Chiara Di Genova in three sets. Di Genova took set one 6-2, but Guirguis bested her 7-5 in set two. In the decisive third set,Guirguis overpowered Di Genova, 6-4.
It was a short day for doubles action as Nazar teamed with Zarate to take on Oihane Villanueva Lopez and Zoe Crimmel of Alcorn State. Their victory came 6-0.
Guirguis, Leena Metwally, Nazar and Zarate completed the tournament undefeated in singles play. The duo of Nazar and Zarate went 2-1 in doubles action. Their lone loss came at the hands of North Alabama’s Louise Booker and Farah Asaad.
Completing play at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic concludes the fall season of women’s tennis. The Trojans look ahead to the spring season.
