Maria Guirguis prepares to serve.
The Troy women’s tennis team picked up two in-state road wins this past weekend to finish up non-conference play with some momentum.
Troy’s victory over in-state rival Samford this past Friday was arguably its biggest win
of the spring season and an encouraging sign for upcoming Sun Belt Conference play.
The Trojans fall behind early 0-2 after some excellent doubles play from the Bulldogs
and a quick straight-set loss on court six.
Troy’s singles players were undeterred and dug in for four consecutive singles
victories to secure the team victory.
Leena Metwally was the first to respond with her 6-4, 6-3 victory on court three while
Gabrielle Leslie tied up the score with her dominant 6-4, 6-0 win in the top singles spot.
Junior Valeriia Avdeeva snatched her sixth singles victory of the season in 6-1, 7-5
fashion on court four as she continues to build on her impressive season for the Trojans.
Finally, Maria Guirguis clinched the match with a gritty 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 outcome in the
second singles spot as she picked up her fifth singles victory so far this year.
After picking up the victory in Birmingham, Alabama, Troy set its sights towards
Huntsville, Alabama, to face off against Alabama A&M.
Troy’s doubles pairings got off to a much better start against Alabama A&M as
Avdeeva and Guirguis blanked their opponents 6-0 on court one to improve their doubles
record to 5-1 this year.
Freshman Veena Nazar and sophomore Emilia Namyslo secured the doubles point
with their 6-4 triumph in the third doubles spot.
Metwally quickly added to the Troy lead with a 6-2, 6-2 showing on court three for
her third consecutive victory.
Avdeeva extended her win streak to six as she cruised past her opponent in straight
sets for the second time in the weekend.
Her impressive 7-1 record in singles is the team-best for the spring season so far.
Leslie clinched the win over Alabama A&M with her 6-1, 6-3 victory in the top singles
spot for her second win of the weekend and third win in singles overall this spring.
The team will look to build on this late non-conference surge as they head to play an
incredibly tough rival in South Alabama on Mar. 8 to begin Sun Belt play.
After, Troy will square off against a significantly less intimidating Southern Miss
squad on Mar. 9 to wrap up the weekend.
