Trojan softball splits opening double header of fall

To begin its fall season, the Troy softball team split a doubleheader with Chipola Community College, dropping the first game 4-3, but bouncing back in the second 3-0.

In game one, the Indians (1-1, 0-0 NJCAA Region 8) got on the board first, recording four hits in the top of the second inning, which led to two scores.

The Trojans (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) were unable to answer and went three up, three down in the bottom of the second.

Troy recorded a costly error in the top of the third inning, allowing Chipola to tack on another run with only one hit that inning.

Troy started to find a rhythm in the bottom of the third, however, as it drove in two runs on four hits.

Sophomore outfielder Taylor Corbett highlighted the inning with a double that helped Troy get within one run heading into the fourth inning.

Chipola scored its final run of the game in the top of the fourth, as Ashley Morris hit an RBI single to bring its total to four runs.

The deficit proved to be all the Indians needed to take game one, as the Trojans were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior designated hitter Cassidy McDilda was able to drive in one last run for the Trojans, putting redshirt-sophomore Jordan Gray across home plate on the RBI single.

A scoreless final inning sealed the win for Chipola.

Senior pitcher Rachel Rigney was charged with the pitching loss for the Trojans after two strikeouts and five hits in three innings.

For the Indians, Krystal Goodman recorded the win with a one-walk, one-strikeout performance in three innings.

The nightcap of the doubleheader began with the Trojans getting on the board. Sophomore outfielder Stephanie Snyder hit an RBI double to left center, taking the lead in the bottom of the second.

After holding Chipola scoreless in the top of the third, Troy continued its offensive rhythm. Troy scored the final two runs of the contest on a pair of RBI doubles from McDilda and senior first baseman Meg Willis.

The score stayed the same for the remainder of the game as the Trojans shut out the Indians 3-0. In seven innings on the mound, sophomore Peyton Glover allowed just four hits and struck out three batters.

Chipola’s Devyn Terry was charged with the loss on the mound.

Offensively, Troy was led by Willis, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double and no strikeouts.

The Trojans will host another doubleheader at the Troy Softball Complex against the Raiders of Northwest Florida State College on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
