Track teams place top 10 in Iron City

The Troy indoor track and field teams finished competition at the Emory Crossplex Invitational on Monday, bringing home a top 10 finish for the women’s squad.

The Trojans competed at the Birmingham Crossplex for the second time this year, and earned a combined eighth-place finish after topping in-state rivals Montevallo and North Alabama, as well as Sun Belt foe Georgia Southern.

Of the 23 teams in the women’s competition, Georgia Southern took the top spot with a total of 113 points. The Eagles also topped the men’s final rankings with 160 points to complete the sweep. Indiya Summerville highlighted the Trojans on the scoreboard, bringing home eight points in the shot put. Her 15.95-meter heave was good enough to hold the second-place finish for Troy.

Camille Franks boasted top 10 finishes in two of her events: a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a 5.14-meter mark, and a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash.

Franks and Alexis Garrett both qualified for the 60-meter dash finals, with Garrett falling closely behind with the sixth-place finish. Garrett also led a trio of Troy hurdlers in the 60-meter hurdles as the Trojans were represented in the top three spots.

Garrett took the top spot in the event with her time of 8.96 seconds, with Sydney Henderson and A’Kasia Frazier following behind with second and third places, respectively. Troy tallied a total of 27 points from the three.

Troy looks ahead to the KMS Invite, where both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action this Sunday. The meet will be the fourth held in the Birmingham Crossplex this season.

Next weekend’s meet will be the first and only of the season not to be held in-state, as the Trojans are set to travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for the Camel City Invitational.
