Track and field finishes in ninth at the Sun Belt Indoor Championship

The Troy track and field team wrapped up its indoor season at the Sun Belt Indoor Championship in Birmingham, toppling personal records and finishing in ninth place.

 

On Monday, Feb. 23, freshmen Sara Zylstra and Naomi Sheppard, along with sophomore Sierra King, and junior Julia Ostendorf made up the distance medley group and broke Troy’s 2007 record of 12:26.30.

 

The group placed seventh, finishing at 12:21.17.

 

Sophomore Allison Taylor set three personal records back to back in the women’s weight throw, besting herself in each heat. She finished in ninth place with a 16.48-meter throw.

 

In the 200-meter dash, freshman Sydney Wright finished first in the heat, setting a new personal record of 24.70. She set another personal record in the 60-meter dash with a new time of 7.63 seconds.

Wright finished both the 200-meter dash and 60-meter dash in seventh place.

 

Freshman Niata Alexander’s 400-meter dash qualified her for a spot in the finals, and set a new personal best of 24.33 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

 

Senior Alexus Cobb also secured a spot in the finals after making a 5.63-meter jump in the long jump event.

 

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, Alexander took home third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.67 seconds.

 

Wright completed the 60-meter dash in 7.74 seconds, placing in eighth.

 

Sophomores Aleeah Stigarll and Riley Schwietz both finished in the top 10 in the women’s pentathlon. They also set personal records for points in the event.

 

Stigarll accumulated 3,271 points while Schwietz collected 2,866 points during the pentathlon.

 

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team took home seventh place, crossing the finish line at 3:56.82.

 

Troy will open its outdoor season on March 6 at the South Alabama Jaguar Opener.
