The Sun Belt Indoor Championships came to a close on Tuesday with the Troy women’s team finishing in fifth place out of 12 total teams.

The Trojans were led by junior Indiya Summerville, who won first place in the shot put event to help her team to its highest-ever finish at the conference championships.

The event kicked off on Monday, Feb. 19, and lasted two days. The Troy men’s team did not take part in the competition.

Texas State emerged victorious with 124 points in the women’s column. UT-Arlington took home the trophy for the men’s side with 130 total points.

It was arguably senior Niata Alexander’s best day of the season as she placed second in the women’s 400-meter dash finals with a time of 54.41 seconds for the Trojans. Freshman Precious Ogba also placed in the event with a solid time of 55.95 seconds that was good enough for fifth place.

Alexander solidified her day with another top-10 finish in the 60-meter dash. Both her and fellow senior Gabriella Henderson combined for 14 total points in the race.

The two seniors finished with the exact same time of 7.64 seconds. Henderson came in second, while Alexander finished third.

The shot put finals saw another familiar face finish in first place. Summerville continued her stretch of impressive dominance with a 15.01m throw. She was the only thrower to eclipse 15 meters.

Troy’s 4×400 meter relay team capped off the day, finishing in second place. Alexander and Ogba both held down the front and anchor positions respectively.

They were joined by freshman Madison Kennedy in the second slot and junior Tiarra Bailey in the third. The official clock in of 3:35.54 helped bring in eight points.

With the indoor season now complete, both teams will get almost a month of rest before the outdoor season begins on Friday, March 16.

The Trojans will take their shot at the Jaguar Classic in Mobile that will last until Saturday, March17.
