International Food Pantry

Tierra McCall The coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted many and the international students at Troy University are no exception. Several international currencies have loss value, and many international students have been affected by increased food insecurity. After noticing this growing problem, the Office of Civic Engagement and the Office of International Student Services partnered to create an International Student Food Pantry. “The Office of Civic Engagement has hosted several food programs and initiatives since it was started in 2009,” said Lauren Cochran, Coordinator of the Office of Civic Engagement. “We have now turned inward to see the needs of the students at Troy University.” Although the food pantry is just getting started, its goal is to become a sustainable support system for students. “We have received donations from Chi Alpha, Sodexo, and faculty and staff to get us started,” said Kathleen Freed, International Student Advisor. Despite its name, the food pantry is also open to domestic students who have a need, as well. The food pantry contains supplemental food items to help students make ends meet. “This is just a small start in meeting the needs of Troy University students,” Cochran said. The Office of Civic Engagement also hopes to create a Student Support Coalition soon. This would involve faculty and staff exploring an array of challenges students may face and provide support. The pantry will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is in Hawkins Hall room 036.
