Christian Mission extends its service to Troy, Pike County

A new Christian Mission Bargain Center in Troy is providing Pike County residents with access to food, financial assistance and affordable household

goods.

The store opened on 300 North Three Notch St. on July 6 and quickly received more than 50 requests for food assistance, according to Executive Director of Christian Mission Centers Amanda Simmons.

“We have seen a huge need,” Simmons said. “That’s probably the number one request so far since we’ve opened our doors.”

Before the store opened, Simmons said the organization repeatedly received calls from Pike County residents seeking assistance. Opening the Troy location expanded

Christian Mission Centers’ service area, allowing residents to apply for help without traveling to the closest location, Enterprise, Alabama.

Residents can receive food and apply for assistance with utilities, rent, medication, clothing and furniture through the store. Simmons said that space for a substantial food pantry was a major reason the organization selected the building. The nonprofit hopes to install a commercial walk-in freezer within the next year, allowing it to distribute more meat and other food.

The bargain store helps finance the organization’s other services, including emergency shelter, food programs and the New Life Recovery program. Simmons said revenue from Christian Mission’s bargain stores supports about 70 percent of its work.

“Our customers, the people that donate goods, I don’t think they realize how much they are a part of our ministries each and every day because they make it possible,” Simmons said.

Simmons said her connection to the recover program is personal. She first came to the Christian Mission Centers 12 years ago before later joining its staff.

“I actually came through their doors in handcuffs needing their recovery

program,” Simmons said. “I know how God used Christian Mission to save my life.”

Jennifer Thomasino, manager of the Troy store, handles daily operations and benevolence paperwork for people seeking food or financial assistance. She was a regular Christian Mission customer before deciding to join its staff.

“I loved it so much that I just decided, ‘Hey, let me get a job,’” Thomasino said. “I’m in it mainly for the ministry of it and just helping people out.” Thomasino said she wants people seeking assistance to feel welcome rather than nervous or ashamed.

“This isn’t just a place where people come to receive assistance,” Thomasino said. “It’s a place where they can find hope, compassion, encouragement and a helping hand when they need it most.”

Thomasino described a man who came to Christian Mission after a

different thrift store turned him away when he sought help. After learning he

needed clothing for a job interview, Thomasino completed the required paperwork, and the organization approved a clothing voucher, providing him professional clothing.

“It’s a blessing to serve the Troy community, and I look forward to continuing to grow the mission and make a positive impact wherever I can,” Thomasino said.
