Students network, find jobs through student part-time job fair

Troy University students got a chance to advance their career paths last Thursday with the student part-time job fair.
The job fair, led by Arminda McKee, the director of career services, was originally a response to the numbers of students who came to the Office of Career Services looking for part-time employment.
“Last year was our very first time hosting this event, and several students got jobs from that particular event and are still working in those positions today,” McKee said.
According to one manager present at the job fair, Troy University students can get jobs that train them to work in higher positions within their career, regardless of their major.
“We have three students working with us currently in part-time positions and in various majors,” said Ryan Newburn, the district manager for Fastenal.
“I think it’s an important event, and we want to be in front of the Troy student body [...] home-growing our next level of leaders for Fastenal.”
One student with Student-Made Troy said even if students are interested in being their own boss, there are still good reasons to check out the part-time job fair.
“Whether you want to start a business or already have an existing business, we are here to promote it and get you funded for it,” said Student-Made Troy Campus Manager Jamarion Willie, a junior electrical engineering major from Huntsville, Alabama.
Willie said Student-Made Troy offers multiple competitions which students can enter in to get funding for their own businesses, as well as various programs, like a student launchpad program, where student entrepreneurs can get one-on-one advising and promotion.
A range of opportunities, from working at Walmart to getting an internship with Trojan Athletics, were available to students at the part-time job fair.
“There’s some good jobs around here, [...] they pay a little more than I thought they would,” said Jesse Denton, a freshman business analytics major from Columbus, Georgia.
Troy University’s staff and representatives for various companies and programs prepare for events like these so that students may get in touch, develop their skills and have opportunities to experience what it is like looking for work.
“We want students to be prepared for events like this,” McKee said. “We will host them throughout the semester and they can come by our office to create a resume if they don’t already have one so they are prepared for the next event.”
