There is a lot to celebrate at the Lunsford Tennis Complex following a weekend that saw the Trojans celebrate senior day and knock off a ranked in-state rival. They went 2-0 on the week, extending their winning streak to six matches.

Over the weekend, Troy also earned its first 4-0 start to Sun Belt Conference play since the 2019 season, while dropping a combined two singles matches – Troy is ranked first in the conference.

For Troy, the week began with Maria Guirguis being named the Week 10 Sun Belt Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. On Saturday, Troy honored seniors Valeriia Avdeeva and Guirguis before beginning play as part of Senior Day – both players are four-year members of the team.

Avdeeva and Guirguis carried their emotions onto the court and defeated Southern Miss’s Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo, 6-2, to open doubles play. Behind the effort of the seniors, the Trojans went on to defeat the Golden Eagles, 3-1.

Guirguis earned the Trojans’ second point of the day from the No.1 position as she defeated Angelina Blinova in straight sets, 6-3 in both sets. Avdeeva earned the third point as she topped Sakura Sudo, 6-4, 6-3.

On Sunday, Troy welcomed No. 69 South Alabama into the Lunsford Tennis Complex. After enduring a weather delay, the Trojans came out firing against the Jaguars and conquered them, 3-1. The day was again highlighted by Troy’s seniors.

Avdeeva and Guirguis secured the doubles point by taking down Week nine’s conference Doubles Team of the Week of Jana Rovira and Rio Maeda, 6-3. Guirguis was not done, as she clinched the final point for the Trojans and moved to 13-0 on the season after standing tall against Week nine’s Player of the Week Maeda, 6-3, 7-5.

The Trojans are down to three matches before turning to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Troy is set to return to the court against Arkansas State on Friday, Apr. 18.

From there, it will head to Lafayette, Louisiana, to take on the Ragin Cajuns before returning home to close out the regular season against Georgia Southern.
