Troy women’s tennis has extended its win streak to seven following a 4-2 victory over Arkansas State. The victory also marked the Trojans fifth win against a Sun Belt Conference opponent. With this victory, Troy moved to 11-6 on the season with two matches to go before the conference tournament.
The day began with the Sun Belt Doubles Team of the Week, Maria Gurguis and Valeriia Avdeeva, moving to 10-3 on the season with a victory over Lilly Cvanciger and Carla Muro Castellvi, 6-4. Hiba Heni and Leena Metwally earned their second win as a team and secured the doubles point for the Trojans by defeating Hanmare McAslin and Helena Bueno, also by a score of 6-4.
In singles play, Valeriia Avdeeva secured her 10th win of the season and Troy’s second point of the day after besting Lilly Cvanciger, 6-4 and 6-2 – Avdeeva is 9-2 from the No. 2 position. On court one, former conference singles player of the week Maria Guirguis moved to 14-0 by topping Anna Grigorevain straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 – dating back to the fall, Guirguis is on a 17-match win streak.
Arkansas State did not go down easy, as it won courts three and four. On court three, Hanmare McAslin moved the score to 2-1 by handing Leena Metwally her first defeat from the No. 3 position in straight sets, 7-5 followed by 6-0. After dropping the singles match on court, one making the score 3-1, Meghna Arun Kumar took down Alexia Zarate, 6-3, 6-2.
After a short run by the Red Wolves, Hiba Heni closed the door on Arkansas State in a three-set victory over Helena Bueno. Bueno took set one via tiebreaker, but Heni answered by taking sets two and three, 6-2.
Troy will return to action from Lafayette, Loiusianna, on Saturday, Apr. 11, when it takes on the Ragin’ Cajuns. The Trojans will conclude the regular season the following week by welcoming the Eagles of Georgia Southern on Saturday, Apr. 18. There is no rest for the weary as Troy is set to take to the Sun Belt Tournament Apr. 22 to Apr. 26.
