Women’s Tennis blanks Sun Belt opponents over senior weekend

The Troy women’s tennis team had an excellent weekend, shutting out both Sun Belt Conference opponents to improve to 8-2 in conference play.

On Saturday, the Trojans faced off against the hapless Warhawks who have yet to win a game against an NCAA opponent this year.

Troy’s superiority was quickly evident as sophomores Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva shut out their opponents 6-0 on court one.

Leena Metwally and Hagar Ramadan-Amin finished shortly after 6-3 on court three.

The Trojans continued to dominate in singles as Metwally swiftly defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 on court five.

Court six stalwart Gabrielle Leslie turned in another great performance as she easily handled her competition 6-2, 6-0.

With the Trojans up 3-0, senior Kristina Kukaras sealed the victory with her 6-4, 6-3 win on court one.

Both teams elected to finish the remaining matches, which all ended in Troy victories.

Guirguis showed impressive fight in her 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback on court three while Avdeeva and Ramadan-Amin both collected two-set victories.

Sunday was Senior Day as the team celebrated Kukaras and Olivia Elliot who will both be graduating at the end of the semester. The team also recognized graduate assistant coach Pepe Llinares who is also leaving the program.

Troy swept itsconference opponents for the second time in the weekend as the team won their seventh straight Sun Belt match against Arkansas State to tie for second place in the standings.

The doubles results were quite similar to the prior match as Troy collected wins on courts one and three in doubles to get the day started.

Leslie built on the early lead with her decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory. Leslie’s record as a Trojan now sits at an incredible 17-1.

Metwally thumped her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to put the Trojans up 3-0 early.

Guirguis clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court three.

The final three matches were played out and the Trojans secured them all including a gritty 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7 victory on court two from Ramadan-Amin.

The Trojans now sit at 8-2 in Sun Belt Conference play as they play host to Coastal Carolina in their regular-season finale at 11 a.m. on April 19.
