The Troy Trojans women’s golf team earned a title for the third consecutive season, as the team took down the competition in the Velvet Classic. Freshman Constanza Quiroga came up clutch in a playoff to win the individual title in Paducah, Kentucky.
Quiroga became the first Trojans to win an individual title since 2019 after logging birdies on three out of her final five holes. She powered Troy’s come from behind win over UNC Asheville – the field also included West Georgia, Loyola Chicago, Murray State, Belmont, Alabama State and UAB.
In the third round, Quiroga took a decisive lead with back-to-back birdies. However, a double bogey on the 17th put her a stroke behind the leaders. Her clutch birdie on the par-5 18th hole forced the playoff, where she birdied the opening hole.
The Trojans finished the first day of competition in second place after carding 16 birdies as a team, the fifth most in the event. Troy led the field in pars across both days of competition.
While Quiroga led the way at five-over, Laura Fangmeyer wasn’t close behind with an eight-over. The junior had an excellent rebound event, tying for seventh place after a rough start to the season a week ago.
Katelynn Altese tied for ninth place at nine-over, building on a strong outing last week. Next for the Trojans was Manya Saini, who tied for 16th place.
Mathilda Ringblom rounded out Troy’s lineup in 26th place, finishing at +15. Two Trojans also competed independently in the event, with Juju Peterson and Victoria Stutts golfing by themselves.
Stutts slotted in tied for 43rd place, shooting +22 over three rounds. After competing in her first event last week, freshman golfer Peterson finished tied for 54th place.
The Trojans have a break before hitting the course for their next event. Troy travels to Greenville, North Carolina, for the Pirate Collegiate on Oct. 6 and 7.
