The 22nd Annual John Robert Lewis (JRL) Leadership Conference, held by Troy University and the City of Troy, will be on Feb. 6 and 7.
The conference was formed in 2002 by Trustee Lamar P. Higgins and was implemented through the Troy University Leadership Institute to kick off Black History Month. The conference, originally just named the Leadership Conference, was renamed after Lewis in 2020 following his death.
The goal of the conference is to promote multicultural collaboration and empower diverse leaders through various speeches and sessions. This year’s theme is History as Power: Leadership Rooted in Legacy.
This year’s JRL Leadership Conference will feature two keynote speakers, Dr. Dionne Rosser-Mims and Sean Freeman.

Rosser-Mims shared some insights into the conference.
“This year’s conference offers a powerful blend of historical reflection and forward-looking leadership development,” Rosser-Mims said. “The theme invites us to honor the past while imagining new possibilities for the future.
“Attendees can expect meaningful dialogue, practical strategies and opportunities to engage with leaders who are doing transformative work across sectors.”
Rosser-Mims, who has been a member of the Troy University faculty since 2007, will speak during the conference’s opening session on Feb. 6 in the Trojan Center Theater. Rosser-Mims was also recently named Vice Chancellor of Troy’s Montgomery campus.
Rosser-Mims shared an overview of her keynote speech.
“My speech will explore the idea that history is not something we simply inherit, it’s something we activate,” Rosser-Mims said. “I’ll reflect on the legacies that shape us, the stories that guide us and the responsibility we carry to build on the sacrifices of those who came before.
“My hope is that attendees walk away not only inspired but equipped with practical tools and renewed commitment to lead in ways that honor the legacy of Congressman Lewis.”
Freeman, two-time Troy alumnus and current actor starring in CBS’s Beyond the Gates, will deliver the keynote address during the conference’s closing luncheon session on Feb. 7 in the Lamar P. Higgins Ballrooms.
Each year the conference committee also selects a new chairperson. This year, the co-chairpersons are Quinton Blocker and Jaylen Tuck.
Rosser-Mims left some words of encouragement for those interested in attending.
“If you’re considering attending, I encourage you to take that step,” Rosser-Mims said. “You will learn, you will be challenged, and you will be uplifted.
“Most importantly, you will join a community of people who believe in justice, service and the power of collective leadership. It’s an experience worth investing in.”
Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students. Registration must be completed by Feb. 5.
