A Troy University student was fatally shot early Friday morning.

According to the Troy Police Department, 20 year old Michael Derek Kennedy was found lying in a yard with multiple chest wounds at the 300 block of Jane Road in Troy.

The shooting was reported to the police on Friday at 3:26 a.m.

“The subsequent investigation revealed that the resident on Jane Road answered an early morning knock on his door to find two subjects outside, one of which was armed with a long gun,” according to the Troy Police Department press release.

“The resident then fired multiple rounds from a handgun toward the armed subject striking him in the chest,” the press release said.

The identities of the resident and the second subject have not been released. The case is currently under investigation and will later be presented to the Pike County Grand Jury.

Kennedy, a sophomore business major from Niceville, Florida, was a member of Sigma Chi, a fraternity on Troy’s campus.

Max Herman, president of the Interfraternity Council, declined to comment at this time.

Friday morning, Sigma Chi’s Twitter account stated, “All events at the Fraternity House this weekend are canceled. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this time.”

According to a university press release, Troy University is offering counseling and other means of support to students, faculty and staff affected by this loss.

“The Troy University family was saddened today by the death of a Troy Campus student, Michael Derek Kennedy,” Dean Student Services Herbert Reaves said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all during this time.”
