Troy Rugby’s spring season has kicked off. The team's season began at the Iron City Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, at the beginning of February, where the Trojans would win the final game of their four games.

The team is composed mostly of newcomers, adding several new members this semester.

“At the beginning of the semester, there were only three members; now we have grown to around 12,” said Team Vice President Charles Longmire, a freshman nursing major from Prattville, Alabama. “We hope to help new players learn how to play and grow it for anyone interested in joining.”

If anyone wants to join the team, it is not too late to join, no matter their level of experience. The team practices every Tuesday and Wednesday on the band field from 5-7 p.m.

“Rugby is the fastest growing collegiate sport, and the majority of rugby players in the United States don’t start playing until college,” said Team President Joshua Williams, a freshmanbiology major from Prattville, Alabama. “No experience is required to play, and we would love to have you come to a practice if you’re interested.”

While the team wants to win games and dominate on the field, it is also a chance to build a bond and find your place in college.

“While we do play rugby, the main purpose of the club is to find a community and have fun with your brothers,” Longmire said. “Any athlete should consider joining; it is not a one-size-fits-all sport.

“We have nearly every size person on our team, so no one should feel like they are too skinny or too big to join.”

The team is now gearing up for the rest of their season with its next tournament in Mobile, Alabama, on April 18. However, those interested in watching the Trojans in action at homeonly have to wait a week after that tournament.

“We have a home tournament coming up on April 25, and we want to have as much support from the student body as possible,” Williams said.

Reading about Troy’s rugby team kicking off their season was really exciting, especially seeing how the players and coaches are working together to start strong. It reminded me of when I joined a school sports club and how much preparation and teamwork mattered before our first match. While tracking some of my own stats and organizing schedules back then, I used Tea Checkerapp to keep everything in order. Stories like this show that with planning and teamwork, even a tough season can feel manageable and rewarding.
