Troy men’s golf finishes 14th at Linger Longer tourney at Kennesaw St.

Against the toughest competition it has faced all season, the Troy men’s golf team finished 14th on Monday at the three-day Linger Longer Invitational in Eatonton, Georgia, hosted by Kennesaw State.

The tournament featured a plethora of Power Five schools such as Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia and No. 8 Alabama, who went home with the tournament victory.

Troy finished with an overall score of 295-294-302. The Trojans held on to the 12th spot until day three, but couldn’t manage to break into the top 10, instead dropping to 14th.

Dean Martin led the Trojans with a total score of 222, which was good enough for a tie for 45th place out of 90 players. The junior shot 6-over par on the weekend, which included a 2-over 74 performance on the final day with four birdies.

Futrell finished the first round at 3-over 75. The freshman followed up his solid opening at an even par on day two, but was tripped up on a par 4 hole that took eight strokes to complete on day three.

He concluded the tournament in 52nd with an 8-over-par with scores of 75-72-77. His 14 birdies were a team high.

Calum Masters and Mac Murphy were right behind Futrell, tying for 53rd.

Masters hit 10 birdies while totaling 225 at a rate of 73-77-75.

Murphy started day one by picking up five birdies in the first round to total an even score over 72. A rough stretch on the final 18 holes hurt the freshman, though, finishing with a total score of 225.

Ike Alexander, the final Trojan in the lineup, finished tied for 72nd place with scores of 77-77-76 through day three.

Alexander had arguably the most consistent weekend for the Trojans, but failed to birdie in the second round.

The Trojans will take the course next in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee, on Friday, April 13.
