Troy cheer placed seventh in the nation in the D1A Small Coed Gameday at Universal Cheerleaders Association’s Nationals in Orlando, Florida.

The team stayed in Orlando, Florida for five to six days.

“I could not have been more proud that they did exactly what I said and asked of them, but when we talked after we performed in both routines, we talked about the journey rather than the outcome of it,” said head coach Nic Laracuente. “Being able to see them from where they started in camp in August to where we are now, it is night and day and they even recognize their own strengths.

“So, for me, it was more of a sense of happiness of how hard they had worked.”

Outside of practices leading up to the competition, the team would take small breaks and have get-togethers while visiting the parks. While fun was had, it was more of a business trip for the team.

Last year was the team’s first year ever having an all-girl team compete traditional. So, this year, it was important for the team to go to nationals and hit its routine.

“This is our Super Bowl,” Laracuente said. “We’re trying to set up goals for ourselves every year, so this placement shows that we are right there with the rest of the teams in the nation.

“Being able to major and to compete against really big teams and big schools was great.”

Troy’s coed team placed against teams like Minnesota, Memphis and Penn State at the UCA Nationals. Moving forward, Laracuente said the team still has a lot of work to do, which makes everyone want to work even harder as they strive to continue going toe-to-toe with the best in the nation.

“For whatever team they’re on, it’s super important to have those friendships and bonds because it is such a long season,” Laracuente said. “Just like a family, you have your ups and downs but being able to sit there and realize that we’re all having the same goal helps a lot for a long season.”

As far as Troy cheer’s regular season, it will continue to go on until March. Then, the team will get ready for tryouts and clinics.

“I’m still living with this team and what we’re doing and then we’ll kind of get ready for next year,” Laracuente said. “When the time comes, I’m looking forward to the participation and watching more and more people come to our trial, which shows that our program is getting better and better every year.”

“I get super excited about seeing the talent level get better and better every year because every year’s different and no year’s ever the same. If you think of it as the same, then realistically, we’re just living in the past, we’re not living towards a future.”
