Troy Arts Council holds outside concert downtown

Troy Arts Council (TAC) hosted a free show on the Square in downtown Troy on Thursday, Sept. 1, to kick off its upcoming series of fine arts concerts.

The concert, open to the public, provided an opportunity for patrons to buy season tickets and enjoy free music and food.

The first performer of the evening was Montgomery native and Troy senior Wyatt Edmondson, who has been song writing for close to eight years now.

Edmonson, a music industry major, performs in the student music group POPulus as well as his own band as a singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer.

Fans can find his extended play, “Higher Ground,” on iTunes and Google Play.

Edmonson said he’s currently working on a new concept EP called “Lover’s Lake” that will be all about Lake Martin.

Though he is a performing music artist himself, Edmonson said he is a “song writer by trade, looking to work as a songwriter for other people as well.”

Following a brief intermission to discuss upcoming concerts, was the Hot Club of Auburn, a gypsy swing band.

TAC is a nonprofit organization closely involved with Troy University in an effort to bring culture closer to home, according to its website, troyartscouncil.com.

“We raise funds through ticket sale, donations, and grants from the city of Troy and Pike County,” said Joel Williams, local attorney, Troy alumnus, and president of TAC. “We, then, arrange for performers to come to Troy — our community — that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to get.”

Arrangements are made for performers to go out into local schools, including Troy University, and give workshops or private performances to teach students of all ages about music.

For every show, there are 100 free tickets available to students on a first-come, first-served basis at the Student Services office in the Trojan Center. Otherwise, tickets are $5 with a Troy student ID.

The next TAC-hosted event will be the Annie Moses Band performing in Claudia Crosby Theater on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
