Track men finish second, women place fourth in weekend meet

The Troy track and field team represented the Trojans in two competitive meets over the weekend, the Bill Carson Invitational and the Tiger Classic on Friday and Saturday.

The Bill Carson Invitational, hosted by East Carolina, featured solid competition such as the Atlantic Coastal Conference’s North Carolina and Sun Belt Rival Coastal Carolina. The Tiger Classic featured some of the best programs in the nation, boasting participation from in-state rivals UAB, South Alabama and Auburn.

Troy stood out during the Bill Carlson Invite, with the men’s team finishing second overall. The women’s team closely followed with a fourth-place finish.

Zach Douglas led the way for the Trojans by claiming the top spot in the shotput with an 18.09-meter throw. Douglas’s 53.78-meter heave in the discus topped his season best and was also good enough for a second place finish.

The women’s squad was highlighted by the four members of the 4x400m relay team, who claimed the overall top spot with a 3:44.79. The relay team topped their season best by nearly two seconds to inch closer to the fastest time in school history, where they currently sit in second.

The remaining Trojans traveled to Auburn, where they competed during the same time as their teammates. The men’s squad found success in the 5000-meter run, where Brackin Stewart and Sawyer Sprung captured fifth and seventh place, respectively.

A’Kasia Frazier led the way for the women’s team by landing in 12th place in the 1000-meter hurdles.

The Trojans will be back in action as one unit Thursday at the USA Multi & Invitational. This three-day meet is hosted by Troy’s conference-rival South Alabama in Mobile.
