Troy's accounting honor society, Beta Alpha Psi, held a lecture last Thursday on artificial intelligence (AI) use in the classroom.

Tu To, a lecturer in the William H. Carr School of Accountancy, led the conversation and discussed how AI could be utilized in curriculum.

“I do think that AI should be implemented into the classroom,” To said. "I think that AI is going to be a great tool for students to use.

“Students don't have access to professors all the time, but they do have access to AI. I am excited about the prospect of AI, and I'm trying to incorporate it more into my classroom.”

Students also shared their opinion on AI use in the classroom.

"I think using AI in the classroom should be encouraged, as long as it's used in the correct way," said Morgan Riley, an accounting major from Brewton, Alabama. "If it's used in a non-credible way, like cheating, I really think it could hurt students.”

“I think AI could help students with their homework and assignments,” said Braydon Martin, an accounting major from Ashford, Alabama. “As long as students use AI for ethical purposes, I don’t see a problem with it.”

Professor To believes AI could take learning to a whole new level.

“Some potential good examples of AI usage would be for students to use AI to explain tough concepts in simpler terms,” To said. “Another great use of AI would be for students to find real world examples to help them understand a topic.

“AI could help students with the brainstorming process when writing an essay, as well.”

Although AI could help students learn, some worry that it will have the opposite effect.

"There are some caveats with using AI; for example, the biggest one is plagiarism," To said.

“Another potential caveat with AI is that its suggestions and answers are typically biased.

“Never entirely rely on AI to make the judgment for you. Always fact check what an AI generated answer tells you.”

Students are expected to uphold Troy University’s standards of academic integrity, even when using AI. To learn when Beta Alpha Psi will hold their next lecture about AI, students are encouraged to follow @troysoa on Instagram.
