SGA announces Dining Appreciation Day

National Food Service Appreciation Day will be recognized on Troy’s campus next week, and the Student Government Association has a plan for it.

Senator Jordan Goodman, a junior communications major form Eclectic, and Senator Blakely Davenport, a junior political science major from Spanish Fort are organizing a token of appreciation to food service workers on Monday, Sept. 26 “for their hard work.”

“There are more than 300 food service workers on the Troy campus and I think they deserve to be appreciated,” Goodman said.

“These people work very hard every day to help us eat and enjoy meals. While we, the student body, often thank them for doing a good job, the SGA thought to organize something that says that the students are grateful even if we don’t explicitly say that in every encounter.”

Tuesday night, Goodman said that there will be a table set up at the Trojan Center and Trojan Dining on Monday, Sept. 26, for students to sign a card that will be given to the food service workers.

“(This will) give the students a chance to voice their appreciation and gratitude for the food service workers,” Goodman said.

Also, SGA and Freshman Forum members will deliver handwritten letters of appreciation to the food service workers individually.

“It is very important for us to reach each and every one of the food service workers individually,” he said.

To better further campus improvements, SGA will be hosting its annual night walk on Tuesday, Sept. 27 which serves to explore potentially unsafe areas on campus.

At the beginning of each semester, SGA members walk around campus at night, getting a first-person insight on how safe or unsafe parts of campus are.

“The SGA night walk is organized at least once a semester to explore areas the might not be as safe as we’d like it to be for students or staff,” said Laken Berry, a junior social work major from Athens and chair of campus welfare committee.

“We look for areas that aren’t well lit or roads that could use a stop sign or reflective mirrors or a cross walk for pedestrians to not have to cross a street randomly. Last year we’ve made many changes, and we look forward to make more this year if needed. Safety on campus is highly prioritized as it should, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

A voter registration drive will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in downstairs Trojan Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. SGA encourages students to fill out a card to vote in the upcoming election if they have not done so already.
