In a new move, Troy University announced two separate ceremonies for Spring Commencement, looking to improve graduation for all attendees

For the first time, Troy University will hold Spring Commencement across two separate ceremonies, scheduled for Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15.

Graduates from the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering will participate in the May 14 ceremony at 10 a.m. The following day, graduates from the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Health Sciences and the Sorrell College of Business will walk at the same time.

Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dr. Kerry Palmer said the change was made to improve the experience for graduates and their families.

“The two-day format allows us to offer more tickets for families,” Palmer said. “With a single ceremony of more than 1,100 graduates, we have to place strict limits on ticket distribution.

“Splitting the ceremonies helps us accommodate more guests. The ceremonies will be a bit shorter, which I think will be more enjoyable for everyone.”

Former Student Government Association (SGA) President Caleb Smith, a senior risk management and insurance major from Gadsden, Alabama, said he supports the decision after attending last year’s commencement.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” Smith said. “A lot of universities already hold multiple ceremonies over several days, which helps reduce traffic and congestion.

“It also means I’ll be able to bring more of my family this year.”

Despite the schedule change, according to Director of Television Aaron Taylor, the university’s livestreaming plans will remain the same. Both ceremonies will be available to watch at troy.edu/live and on the university’s Facebook page.

“Our production setup and the way we do things will stay exactly the same,” Taylor said. “We’ll just be holding graduation a day earlier than usual.”

Dr. Lance Tatum, president of Northwest Missouri State University and former senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at Troy, will serve as the guest speaker for both ceremonies.

The events will also include the commissioning of several new Army and Air Force officers.

Palmer said he hopes the updated format creates a meaningful experience for graduates.

“We want to create a special day that our graduates will remember long after they leave Troy,” Palmer said. “We are very proud of them and look forward to celebrating their achievements this spring.”
