Ngnawo continues stellar career at Troy

Although the Troy women’s basketball has started 0-3 after a grueling road trip, newcomer Fortuna Ngnawo has been a bright spot for the Trojans.

Ngnawo has posted two double-doubles in just three games, translating her skills to the Division I level. The forward from Bafoussam City, Cameroon transferred to Troy from Cochise College in Arizona.

Against Montana State last week, Ngnawo recorded her second double-double after scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the season opener at Buffalo. She led the Trojans in points and rebounding against Montana State, whereNgnawo scored 15 points and snagged 11 boards in the contest.

In a tough game at nationally ranked Alabama, Ngnawo nearly had her third straight double-double. She scored nine points and had seven rebounds in 22 minutes against the Crimson Tide.

Over her three games with the Trojans, Ngnawo has been an efficient scorer. She has shot 54% from the field, including a 7-for-12 performance against the Bobcats.

Ngnawo has been able to continue playing at a high level despite a huge leap in competition. At Cochise, she collected plenty of hardware.

Ngnawo was tabbed as a NJCAA Second-Team All-American as a freshman in 2022-23, and she was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season.

Her start at Troy is no surprise to head coach Chanda Rigby and those who watched her at Cochise. Ngnawo nearly averaged a double-double as a freshman, scoring 13.3 points per game and bringing in 9.8 rebounds a game. She logged 14 double-doubles in 33 starts en route to a Junior College Top 40 All-Star berth.

After her standout season, Ngnawo improved as a sophomore, managing to average a double-double. She scored 16.9 points per game and had 11.4 boards a game last season.

Ngnawo shot 47% from the field and had four games, where she eclipsed the 25-point mark. Additionally, the 6-foot-tall player logged 20 double-doubles.

Led by Ngnawo, Cochise won the NJCAA Region I championship, going 25-7. Ngnawo scored 21 points in the title game, adding 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the win over Eastern Arizona College.

Ngnawo and the Trojans look to get their first win of the season against Chattanooga on Thursday. The road game tips off at 5 p.m. at McKenzie Arena.
