New female-only ministry begins

New to Troy’s campus, The Redeemed is an female-only Christian ministry that focuses on bringing young women together to share their faith. It met for the second time on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Arboretum.

“Our main message is to share the redemption of Christ with girls and to share what it looks like to live a redeemed life,” said Emily Tew, a freshman communication major from Headland.

“The first gathering was only last semester, so we’re still experimenting and trying to figure out exactly the best way to go about the service.”

Tew is one of the women who began the ministry last semester. Accompanying her in this endeavour is her friend Sydney Roe, a sophomore social work major from Pell City.

Being a female-only community, the group aims to be a sanctuary where young women can come together and bond as they share their faith.

Roe touched on the significance of having a ministry specifically aimed toward young women.

“As girls we understand each other,” Roe said. “Girls and guys they just deal with different things.”

According to Roe, Troy’s lack of an all-girls ministry was the initial inspiration for the girls to come together and do something different.

“In Ephesians 1:7, it talks about the redemption that’s found in Christ,” Roe stated. “And so we thought that we would call ourselves Redeemed, because in Christ we are all redeemed.”

The night consisted of singing, prayer, a testimony and a message, all followed by refreshments. The congregation discussed the topic of confidence, drawing inspiration from the Bible.

The guest speaker for the event was Whitney Johnson of Troy. After establishing the definition of confidence as being the state of feeling certain about the truth of something, Johnson stressed the importance of having confidence in the right places.

“If you have confidence in the wrong things, then you are going to be defeated, and those things can take over you,” Johnson said. “And it’s so important to know that, especially in college because there are so many things pulling your attention with clubs, academics, work and social life.”

“I think it’s important to find your confidence in Christ because his love is one thing that’s never failing,” said Marissa Davis, a junior global business major from Robertsdale.

While sharing her testimony and life experiences at the beginning of the service, Davis talked about how her faith helped her through the difficult times.

“Whenever we get beat down by things that happen to us, whether that be family issues, troubles of being away from home, anxiety, struggle of making it on your own—it’s important to have that confidence,” Davis said. “And faith in Christ gives you the strength to fall back on.”
