New class registration system comes into effect

Students will be able to register for classes only through the new Student Self Service system during the upcoming class registration period, which starts on April 6 for summer classes and April 13 for the fall 2016 session.

“The old version will be completely gone,” said Farrah Gaston, a junior biomedical sciences major from Camden and the current academic life committee chair in the Student Government Association. “It’s the only way we’ll be able to register.”

SGA, in conjunction with Margaret Uphaus, student academic systems coordinator, will be conducting student planning sessions to familiarize the students with the new system on Thursday, March 24.

There will be three sessions, at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., in Bibb Graves 129 and one session at 6:30 p.m. in Hawkins 122, each with door prizes.

“For each session you have a chance to win cups, candies, Relay for Life buttons and more,” Gaston said.

Students can access the portal now to add classes to their fall semesters and to plan their schedules. That schedule can then be sent to the students’ advisers to remove the adviser holds. Uphaus will explain this and other specifications of the portal during Thursday’s sessions.

“Make sure you know how to register,” Gaston said. “If you go through the session and you have a question that she (Uphaus) hasn’t told you about, then you need to ask.”

During its weekly meeting on Tuesday night, SGA also placed constitutions for the Trojan Chess Club and Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement on docket.

The Trojan Chess Club is intended for recreational as well as serious players. The Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement’s constitution was drafted by several leadership minor students, according to Andrew Dearing, a sophomore criminal justice from Montgomery and chairman of the group.

“I think it’s a place to go and continue discussion about stuff going on in Troy, leadership qualities and how to make Troy better,” Dearing said.

The SGA senators will read the constitutions over the week and vote on them during the next meeting.

All the seats for next year’s SGA senate are now open for application to all students. Senate seats are divided according to three areas: by residence in one of the on-campus dorms, by affiliation with one of the five colleges within Troy University and by overall representation of the student body.

The applicants must have a minimum of 2.3 GPA and pay a $10 application fee. The deadline is March 29.

“We want students who are dedicated, who love our school, love SGA and want to see a change,” said SGA President Heath Barton, a senior global business major from Opp.
