The Student Government Association (SGA) gathered in the senate chamber to recognize their biggest accomplishments of the semester on Wednesday.
For the press conference, members of the executive council, presidential cabinet and the University Honors Global Scholars Program assembled to recognize what SGA President Caleb Smith called an unprecedented semester.
Twelve pieces of legislation were passed by the senate and signed into law.
According to Smith, two of those 12 pieces ended up being major legislative accomplishments.
“We had a lot of major pieces of legislation,” Smith said. “I feel like the safety resolution holds the most weight.
“In that resolution, we asked the university to implement metal detectors and clear bag policies for ticketed events. Another major piece was the reorganization of our student senate.
We increased the senate to 45 members, reflecting the name changes of the colleges that were done this past spring.”
The SGA and the University Honors Global Scholars Program recently launched a new partnership. Samuel Myers, a freshman accounting major from Eclectic, Alabama, was appointed to represent the program and now holds a spot in the presidential cabinet.
“Through this partnership, we hope to find more ways to involve the University Honors Global Scholars' Program in campus life and further cement ourselves as a staple of academic success,” Myers said. “We want Troy to be known for its academics.
“The program also hopes to make a lasting impact on the people around us by connecting Alabama to the rest of the world.”
Vice President of Campus Affairs Abby Gilliland, a junior hospitality and tourism management major from Alexander City, Alabama, oversaw the Homecoming Committee.
“Our theme this year was ‘No Place like Troy,’” Gilliland said. “Truly, there is no place like Troy, and this year’s Homecoming really showed that.
“We really captured the heart and spirit of the Trojan community. Each event throughout the week was amazing; the energy was truly incredible.”
After one full semester of being SGA President, Smith believes the organization's biggest accomplishment isn’t a piece of legislation or bill.
“Our biggest accomplishment is the activity of our senate and our SGA as a whole,” Smith said. “I’m very thankful for having a very proactive and passionate senate and cabinet.
“They’ve been taking on new ideas and new initiatives, and that’s why we’re getting things done.”
According to Smith, students can expect SGA to hold more press conferences in the spring semester. To watch the entire press conference, readers can visit TROY TrojanVision News on YouTube.
