The Troy men’s golf team dominated its competition at the Daytona Beach Invi-
tational. After being in a tie for first place with Stetson at the end of day one, the
Trojans used a stellar even-par team round to win their first trophy since Sep. 10, 2024.
13 out of the 14 other teams shot +10 or worse on the second day, vaulting Troy
to the victory.
Troy took home the win over Stetson, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Campbell, UNC
Wilmington and more.
“It was great to get a win this week on an incredibly tough golf course,” head
coach Clay Bounds said. “Our guys stuck to the plan from the beginning of the
week that the course was going to play hard and that par was a good score, and it
certainly was.
“I am proud of the way they fought and battled through adverse conditions.”
After missing all of the fall with an injury, Brantley Scott bounced back in a big
way. He finished the event at -1 to win his first career tournament title. He carded 47
birdies, staying consistent throughout the tournament.
Nick Fowlkes and Lee Poppell also finished in the top 10 – Fowlkes tied for
fourth, finishing only four strokes behind Scott.
Poppell, meanwhile, finished tied for ninth after finishing +7. His final round was
the second best over the whole event and propelled him into the top 10.
Jake Springer collected four birdies over his final eight holes to finish the event
tied for 17th place. Rounding out Troy’s golfers was Pablo Gracia, who finished tied
for 31st place.
The Trojans will try to keep their momentum going with a short week. Troy travels
to Thomasville, Georgia, on Mar. 10 to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate. The
two-day tournament featured five Power Four teams last year – Troy finished tied
for ninth in the 14-team field.
