Men’s golf kicks off its spring season

The men’s golf team started up its spring season at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship and finished up in seventh place out of 15 on Sunday, Feb. 22.

 

On Friday, Feb. 20, senior Tolver Dozier tied for second, shooting a 71 after making three birdies in the opening round. He was only behind leader senior Will Murphy from South Carolina by two shots.

 

Troy as a team tied for fifth place, shooting a 294. Arkansas finished in first place for day one with 288.

 

Senior Phillip Brennan tied for twentieth finished his round one-over. Teammates senior Jake Tucker and sophomore Luke Moser tied for fortieth as they both shot a 75.

 

The second round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship took place on both Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21, due to the threat of inclement weather.

 

Troy fell back to seventh place after shooting a 292, while No. 8 Baylor, which was in ninth place after the opening round claimed fifth place in the second round.

 

Dozier led the Trojans once more, tying for eighteenth this time. He and Brennan both shot a 74.

 

Tucker finished his second round with a 71 and tied for twenty-first. He had a mixture of birdies and bogeys on both the front nine and the back nine.

 

Sophomore Jared Bettcher finished up the final round with seven-under 65, allowing him to tie for thirty-sixth place after starting off in eighty-first place.

 

His round ended up tying with Kevin Blanton’s 1995 round for the lowest in Troy history. Bettcher had five birdies and one eagle during his final round on Sunday.

 

Tucker wrapped up his final round tied for tweny-third. Moser and Brennan closed tied for forty-seventh place.

 

Troy remained in seventh place for the final round, but was only two shots shy of fifth place. The Trojans managed to score 45 birdies during the three rounds.

 

No. 9 South Carolina ended up winning the team title and No. 8 Baylor finished in third.

 

Troy’s men’s golf team will travel to Auburn for the Tiger Invitational on March 8-10.
