Following a victory at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate last week, the Troy men’s golf team continued their strong play with a second place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
Although they lost to No. 15 Florida State, the Trojans ultimately finished ahead of No. 51 Arkansas, No. 55 Furman and No. 56 Florida Gulf Coast. Troy finished -11 as a squad.
“Our guys played some amazing golf this week,” said head coach Clay Bounds. “The only team we lost to was No. 15 in the country and the host school.
“The golf course set up really well for our game and the guys proved that by beating a lot of teams by a number of strokes – I’m very proud of our fight.”
Brantley Scott etched his name into Troy’s record books with his performance – he finished second at -10, and shot a program record 62 on Monday. Just one week after winning Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golfer of the week, Scott turned in an excellent performance.
He fell five shots short of Florida State’s No. 27 Luke Canton, but recorded Troy’s lowest recorded round since at least 2005.
“I’m very proud of Brantley as well,” Bounds said. “It was another great week for him.”
Following Scott was Nick Fowlkes, Jake Springer, Lee Poppell and Pablo Garcia.
Fowlkes also earned a top-five finish, carding two eagles during a three-under opening round. He finished the event at -5 with 11 birdies under his belt.
Meanwhile, Springer finished at 211 to secure a tie for 19th place. He’s had six top-25 finishes in seven events this season.
Poppell and Garcia both finished at 218, tying each other for 52nd place.
The Trojans have one more short week, traveling to Houston, Texas, to compete in the All-American Intercollegiate. The two-day event will take place during spring break. Following the event, Troy will take a much needed break before swinging back into action on Apr. 7.
