Megan Loftis continues posting well-rounded season for softball

It is impossible to talk about Troy’s Megan Loftis without bringing up her speed.

“They’re fast, they’re quick, and they have good bat to ball,” said head coach Eric Newell on to Loftis’ and Mia Tidmore’s multi-hit games against Texas State on Friday.

“Part of our DNA is small ball.”

Loftis fits this style perfectly, as an excellent slap hitter and base stealer. Loftis ranks second on the team with a batting average of .398 this season, while also swiping the third most bases for the Trojans with 10.

Loftis spoke to this in an interview after a double header against West Georgia.

“I just try to stay within myself and not try to do too much or be too big,” Loftis said.

A telling statistic about the senior’s selflessness is her 11 sacrifice hits on the season, which leads the conference and surpasses second place on Troy by eight.

The center fielder contributes to a well-rounded game by being top five on the team in runs, hits, on-base percentage and putouts. Loftis has been a consistent contributor this year, starting 36 of the team’s 42 games thus far in the 2026 season.

The lefty bat has gotten exponentially more comfortable at Troy in her second year with her starting job after thriving in her role as a pinch runner last year, scoring 17 runs in the 2025 season.

Loftis is no stranger to a high batting average, as she hit over .400 her senior season at North Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia. This led to her status as a Region 7A All-Region First Team member and aGADC All-Star.

The high school standout then went to play at the junior college level at the College of Central Florida. She took no time to adjust to collegiate-level softball, as she hit .472 her freshman year with 47 stolen bases. Her sophomore season, she only improved as she led the nation with 104 hits and set a program record for 75 stolen bases, earning her NJCAA D-I All-American and Mid-Florida Player of the Year nods.

The speed threat shined in the midweek double header against West Georgia on April 8 with three hits in four at-bats, with a run scored and an RBI across the two games. Two of the hits came with two outs, and the other was a bunt single. The center fielder also made a career play, catching a fly ball and then throwing out a runner attempting to advance for her first career assist at Troy.

The slap hitter continued the hot bat into the weekend series against Texas State, totaling four infield hits, a stolen base and a run scored across the three games. However, the team struggled, especially on Saturday as Loftis’s two hits in that game accounted for half of the team’s total number of hits.

The senior looks to stay hot and help the team regroup as they rest without a midweek game and travel to Statesboro to take on Georgia Southern this weekend.
