Whether it’s climbing glaciers in Argentina or studying culture in Japan, Troy University students are stepping beyond the classroom and into the world through Troy’s study abroad program.
This semester, students are being offered trips to multiple destinations with several different academic focuses through Troy’s study abroad program.

Troy students and faculty visited Germany in March of 2024
In December, Spanish classes will be offered alongside a 10-day trip to Cuba. Additionally, a seven-day Curaçao trip including scuba certification and multiple dives will focus on math classes, as student divers will learn gas ratios and diving depths.
Over Spring Break, students can take an HSTM focused trip to Japan, a Journalism and Communications focused trip to Egypt and a math focused trip to Italy.
Dr. Kelly Suero, chair of World Languages and Cultures, and associate professor of Spanish, is set to co-lead a Troy Study Abroad trip to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil in May. This trip will mark the first time a Troy group has ever visited Brazil.
“We’ll start in Buenos Aires with colorful neighborhoods, the beautiful Teatro Colón and a tango dinner show,” Suero said. “Then we’ll ferry to Uruguay to explore historic Colonia del Sacramento before heading north to Iguazú Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
“On the Brazilian side, we’ll visit a world-famous bird park, explore the Itaipú Ecological Reserve, and hike and kayak through the Atlantic Rainforest.”
With collaboration from 63 partner universities around the world and the support of various exchange programs, the options for learning abroad are endless.
The program is open to all majors and classifications, enabling students to gain a global perspectives. Destinations range widely, covering all corners of the world.
Candidates who aim to explore all the world has to offer are advised to go through the appropriate steps to secure a spot on a trip. Early preparation not only ensures eligibility but also increases chances of getting into a preferred program or destination.
Students can apply for a short-term faculty-led program which typically lasts two weeks in total or a semester long exchange program. The latter requires students to plan at least a semester in advance.
“The sooner, the better,” said Director of Study Abroad Sarah McKenzie. “For an exchange, at least a semester in advance, so fall planning for spring, spring planning for fall and academic year.
“For faculty-led programs, it is vital that students sign up as soon as possible so that the faculty leader has a head count as there are minimum numbers to meet and deadlines.”
Financial assistance is also available for students seeking to lower travel costs. Among a number of scholarships available, the Chancellor’s Award for Global Competitiveness is the most common and is awarded once every academic year.
Those looking to apply for financial assistance can review the preliminary requirements to ascertain eligibility. Meeting these requirements early can help students avoid delays and make the most of available funding opportunities.
Students must have completed at least one full semester at Troy University, be registered as a full-time student and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.
With the new semester just beginning, students still have time to take the first steps toward studying abroad. While the idea of traveling internationally may seem daunting, program leaders and students have emphasized the value of stepping into new experiences.
“It can be scary to step outside of your comfort zone, but how will you know if you like it if you never try,” said Melody Chen, a junior dance major from Andalusia, Alabama. “Growth stems from change.
“Don’t let your fears or uncertainty prevent you from experiencing moments and making memories.”
With a wide range of destinations, flexible program options and financial support available, Troy University’s study abroad program continues to open doors for students seeking academic and personal growth on a global scale.
