Dr. Hui-Ting Yang has been named the new director for the John M. Long School of Music.

Yang joined Troy in 2007 as a piano instructor and has served the university ever since.

Yang is moving into the director’s position after holding the title of interim music director from July 2022 to July 2024.

“I am excited to enter into this new role,” Yang said. “It is an honor and a privilege to work with such amazing colleagues and students.

“I am excited to be part of this wonderful program. I can’t wait to introduce new innovations to the continuing tradition of excellence already in place.”

Carley Jo Broyles, an adjunct professor and Troy alumna, is in high spirits after learning of Yang’s new position.

“It’s been really cool to watch Dr. Yang grow,” Broyles said. “From being a student at Troy to now being an adjunct professor, I’ve had the privilege of seeing her go from piano instructor to director.

“The best part is that she is still the same Dr. Yang -- she hasn't changed one bit. She has more of a voice now, and she has more of a presence that we need in the school of music. I know she is going to do great things.”

Madison Smith, a graduate student pursuing her MBA in music business, shares a similar sentiment about Yang.

“I’m very excited for Dr. Yang,” Smith said. “Dr. Yang has been someone who not only exemplifies leadership through her words, but through her actions.

“Even when she was exclusively the piano professor, I always knew that Dr. Yang was someone who meant business. When you know Dr. Yang is involved, you know stuff is going to get done.”

With her new role, Yang already has a vision for the future of the school of music.

“I want to improve the performance spaces, update the curriculum and offer more possibilities for international travel for our students and faculty,” Yang said. “I also want to improve visibility of the school of music in the local community.

“I want to reach farther with recruiting and work on improving the work-life balance for faculty and students.”

Although Yang has already had a fruitful 17-year career at Troy, becoming the director for the John M. Long School of Music is just the next chapter in her story.
