Black Student Union shares the dos and don'ts of college at presentation

Troy University’s Black Student Union (BSU) held a college prep 101 night for students last Thursday. The crash course took place in Patterson Hall, where students gathered to learn some tips on how to be successful during their time in college.

The main focus of the meeting was to teach students the do’s and don’ts of Troy University.

Some do’s included getting involved and utilizing more of the campus’s resources, while the don’ts included isolating yourself and partying too much.

“I would say definitely understand that you’ve come to Troy to get your education,” said Mikail Williams, the BSU social media chair and a senior human resources management major from Cincinnati, Ohio, who led the meeting Thursday night. “Yes, there are parties.

Yes, you’re here to build connections, but you’re also here to graduate.” “It was actually pretty fun to think about all the dos and don'ts that we do and don’t do,” said Soleil Copeland, a freshman criminal justice major from Dothan, Alabama.

“Study more, be on time and don’t procrastinate – which is something I struggle with.”

She also shared the significance of BSU and other organizations that help guide students through their education.

“It’s good to find an organization to lock in for togetherness, unity and to be a part of a good community,” Copeland said.

The event offered refreshments and created a laid-back atmosphere for students to introduce themselves, mingle and get to know one another.

“I joined BSU because I wanted to get involved and help in any way I could,” Williams said. “I feel like everyone should have someone who's been in their position to be able to give them advice and guide them.”

Troy's BSU offers community service opportunities and encourages all students to come out, get involved and make memories together.

“I encourage them to make memories. It's a great opportunity to know fellow people that are like-minded,” Williams said. “I want them to take the opportunities they have and make the best of it, because time does fly by.”
