On behalf of the Troy University family, welcome to the 2015 IMPACT sessions, which are designed to provide an orientation to your college home.

By choosing TROY, you have selected a University steeped in tradition, as we were founded in 1887 as a teacher-training institution. Today, we are a doctoral-level University that offers more than 70 different major fields of study.

TROY takes pride in its designation as Alabama’s International University. Your classmates come from 75 different nations and speak 80 languages other than English. Get to know students from other nations and cultures. You will broaden your horizons, and you will have the opportunity to teach your international classmates about our values and customs, as well.

Develop habits that lead to success: Manage your money wisely, strike a balance between study and recreation, get adequate rest and eat a balanced diet. Have fun, but remember your first priority is to get an education.

Don’t let your newfound freedom overwhelm you. And if you stumble, shake it off and renew your dedication to excel in the classroom. Remember the words of Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, and failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” Indeed, persistence is the mortal enemy of defeat!

We take leadership training seriously at Troy University, and we urge all students to get involved in aspects of campus life outside the classroom routine. There are almost 150 different organizations and clubs, so I am sure you will find pursuits that are right for you — play an intramural sport, join a service organization or get involved in our Greek System.

And make time to attend intercollegiate athletic events and fine arts performances such as concerts and plays. You will benefit personally, and your classmates giving their best on the field of play or the performing arts stage will appreciate your support. Research shows that involved students are successful students.

Finally, take the advice of comedian Woody Allen, who said, “Ninety percent of success is showing up!” Go to class, and get to know your professors. They will help you if you show an interest in your academic work.

You are entering a special and exciting stage of your life. I wish you nothing but the best, and I am glad you chose Troy University!
