Applications now open for students interested and eligible

For students interested in serving as a leader and role model to their peers on campus, resident assistant applications for Fall 2025 are opening soon.

“It is a great opportunity to connect with a lot of people on Troy’s campus,” said Jessica Roberts, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Tallahassee, Florida. “I would highly recommend applying if you have been thinking about it.”

From March 24 to March 26, those interested can pick up applications at the housing office in Shackelford Hall. Applications must be turned in to the Housing Office by 5 p.m. on April 1.

Not only does becoming a resident assistant grant students the opportunity to step into a leadership position, but it allows them to work with individuals of different backgrounds and cultures.

“The biggest things are you have to be a people person and be well-rounded,” said Sabrina Foster, associate director of housing. “We deal with so many types of individuals, so you have to have an open mindset that there are a lot of different personalities you would be working with on a daily basis.”

Other benefits include guaranteed on-campus housing, free housing and a biweekly stipend. There are also a few requirements students must possess to be eligible for the position. Applicants must be a full-time student at the university, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, have lived in on-campus housing for at least two semesters and be in good standing with the university.

Current resident assistants shared their experiences and encouraged others to apply before it’s too late.

“It has been very rewarding and something I have been grateful to be a part of for three of my college years,” Roberts said. “One hard thing about being a resident assistant is getting through to some residents, but it is a challenge that can be worked through.

“Overall, it is a great group of people to work beside, and the staff in the housing office is the best.”

Despite the many benefits and fun experiences that come from being an RA, the role also requires a lot of dedication and time.

“We definitely need students who are willing to put in the work,” Foster said. “It’s the kind of job where even when you're not on call, you're always on call.

“You never know when a student in your building may need something.”

After picking up the paper application, students interested in applying will also be sent an electronic form to fill out. That form must include a reference from a faculty or staff member. The next step of the application process is an interview with housing supervisors.

Students who are chosen to be resident assistants for the 2025 Fall semester will need to be available for required training on July 27. To learn more information about the application process, students can talk to their current resident assistant or go to the housing office directly.
