Band to host first Flute Day

Olivia Nobles Troy University’s John M. Long School of Music will host the first ever Troy Flute Day on Saturday, Feb. 16. The complete schedule of events can be found online, as well as free copies of music for those who wish to participate in the Festival Flute Choir Rehearsal and Performance. Dr. Heather Small, assistant professor of flute, emphasized her hope for participation from anybody interested in the instrument, despite education or experience level. “Exposure to these things creates an interest, and that’s what we’re hoping for,” Small said. Eva Amsler, a professor of flute from Florida State University, is this year’s guest artist. To begin the day, Amsler will give a sample of one of her popular classes on the “dynamic integration” of all of the necessary aspects of playing the flute. Participants are encouraged to bring a towel, as stretching techniques and positioning exercises will be explored. Small also spoke about how this event is beneficial to the students already receiving a formal music education. “They get to watch a master teacher; any time you can observe that, you learn valuable skills.” Peter Nguyen, a senior psychology major from Montgomery, said he is excited for the attention that the flute will be gaining from this event. “I love the fact that there’s a day centered around flutes,” Nguyen said. “It may not seem like it, but flutes are not a well known or popular instrument … like people know what a flute is, but nothing else – so it really motivates me getting to be around other flute players.” In addition to the workshops and question and answer sessions, attendees will be able to browse a selection of flutes, flute accessories and music for sale during the event. The sale of JL Smith instruments, while not available during the hours of Troy Flute Day, will also be facilitated the evening prior in Smith Hall, room 213, from 5 to 7 p.m. Pedro Ferreira, a sophomore music industry major from Lisbon, Portugal, said the event is important, because it fosters an environment where musical culture is shared. “Not everyone has access to a private tutor, so these events where you can speak with a professional and watch them work are important, especially for people not taking university music courses,” Ferreira said. Troy Flute Day will conclude with a recital by Amsler, which can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of musical ability. The all-day event, beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting until 5 p.m., will take place in Long Hall, rooms 104 and 107.
