The zombie genre is my absolute favorite when it comes to horror. I am a diehard fan of "The Walking Dead," "The Last of Us," "Call of Duty: Zombies" and nearly every other installment that the undead have to offer.
Because I was just a kid when the genre was hitting a resurgence in the late 2000s and early 2010s, there were a good bit of zombie movies I didn't get to grow up with because I was such a scaredy-cat.
One of the biggest ones that I missed came out when I was just 10 years old, and that is 2013's "World War Z."
After my first watch of it just a few weeks ago, it became one of my favorite zombie movies with so many elements of the genre done so well.
The plot follows a former United Nations agent who gets called back into action by the U.S. government when a virus breaks out across the globe. While also trying to save his family from the outbreak, he must travel the world to try and discover a cure.
This movie would really suck if he was just a regular dad that just worked construction. The movie wouldn't have even been long enough for a YouTube video. He pretty much has the entire U.S. military at his disposal for most of the movie, which came in handy more times than I can count on both sets of fingers.
Apart from his limitless plot armor, this movie is ridiculously good. The tension and severity of the cinematography breaks down the screen and puts you right there next to the main characters. You forget to breathe sometimes with how stressful the situations are.
Another aspect that is so well done is its realism. No, we haven't had a zombie virus rage across the globe, but I feel like if we did, this would be identical to how the world would respond.
Everything is so grounded. Yes, he's flying from country to country to save the world, but there's so many real-world stakes that occur. One of the side characters dies from slipping on a wet surface and his gun misfires. Unfortunately, that would be how most of us go out in a zombie apocalypse. I don't care how many years you were in the boy scouts . . .
Overall, I think "World War Z" is one of the most realistic interpretations of the zombie genre that we've ever seen, and I encourage everyone to give it a watch.
