Troy women’s tennis concluded the regular season with a 12-7 record and went 6-1 in Sun Belt Conference play after defeating Georgia Southern, 4-2.
The Trojans’ 12 victories fall one short of 2024-25’s 13-win season, but their six conference wins tie last season’s mark. Troy has secured double-digit wins in every season dating back to 2020-21.
The duo of Hiba Heni and Leena Metwally were the first Trojans to claim victory after defeating Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima on court three, 7-5. On court one, Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis officially secured the doubles point for Troy by toppling Angelina Mihajlovic and Evelyn Warkentin, 7-5 – the senior duo concludes the regular season with a team-best 11-5 record.
Avdeeva carried her momentum into singles play, where on court two she again faced Mihajlovic, who she defeated, 6-2, 6-0. With this win, she secured her spot as one of three Trojans to eclipse the ten-win mark this season. Alexia Zarate moved the score to 3-0 in favor of the Trojans after conquering Amelie Rosadoro in straight sets, 6-4 followed by 6-1.
Evelyn Warkentin was the first Eagle to claim victory as she defeated Maria Guirguis in three sets. Guirguis took set one 6-1, but Warkentin fought back and took sets two and three, 6-4 in both sets – Guirguis endsthe regular season boasting a 14-2 from the No. 1 position. Mackenzie Leopold moved the score to 3-2 in favor of Troy by defeating Sama Hindawy in straight sets, 7-6, 7-1.
With the Eagles threatening, Metwally took matters into her own hands and closed the door on Georgia Southern against Franzi Heinemann. Heinemann took set one 6-3, but Metwally stormed back and took sets two and three, 6-0 and 6-2 to earn her eleventh victory of the season.
With the regular season completed, Troy’s next stop is Rome, Georgia, to do battle in the Sun Belt Tournament. Action is set to begin Wednesday, Apr. 22, and run through Sunday, Apr. 26. The Trojans are entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will be taking on either App State or Southern Miss. The squad will open play on Apr. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
