Women’s golf swings into eighth place during the Pirate Collegiate Classic

Troy Women’s golf won eighth place during its time at the Pirate Collegiate Classic in Greenville, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.

Throughout the tournament, held by East Carolina, the Trojans showed signs of improvement over their last season. They scored 882 overall, which is better than any of their tournaments last season, and they scored three rounds under par throughout the tournament.

Improvement was shown over last year’s season on an individual level as well. First-year Trojan Roberta Alvarez scored two rounds under par on Monday and tied for sixth place overall. Alvarez ended the week with 4-under and 14 total birdies. Roberta tied third place in the amount of birdies total and tied for second in points under par 5 courses, finishing tied for sixth place overall.

After originally tying for 42nd place on Monday, Mara Dajer shot four birdies and 1 under-71 on Tuesday. She was 2-under before in the first nine courses of Tuesday’s round, before scoring under par again in the second half. Overall, Dajer improved her performance from her first game of the season, where she scored on par and 1-over. Dajer finished tied for 31st overall.

Manya Saini shot ten birdies and one eagle throughout the tournament. Saini scored 6-over par overall after scoring three birdies and an eagle in the first round and five birdies during the second round. Saini also tied for 31st place at the end of the tournament.

After tying for 74th place on Monday, Evelyn Tankersley finished 12 spots higher at 62nd place. Tankersley finished the final round of the tournament shooting four birdies and scoring a season’s best score of 73, ending the round with Troy’s second-lowest score. Anna Roldan Sewald finished 56th at the end of the tournament, after being two shots back at the end of Monday.

As a team, Troy ended Monday tied in eighth place and shot a combined 24 birdies and 9-under as a team during par 5 courses. NC State ended up winning at the end of the tournament on Tuesday by scoring nine shots less than UNC Greensboro. East Carolina finished third, and Troy ended the tournament maintaining eighth place. Troy conceded the tie from Monday with Jax State, who ended seventh overall.

Looking forward, the Trojans will play in Jonesboro, Arkansas, next at the Lady Red Wolves Classic on Oct. 12-13 and will play in the Pat Bradley Invitational in Miami closer to the end of the month.
