On the first day of classes last Wednesday, the Welcome Week Committee started off the semester by posing a question to students: What is something you want to accomplish this semester?
A table was set up for the day in the Trojan Center with the question written on a large piece of Kraft paper. As students walked by, they could pick up a marker and write their answers on the paper. Students’ answers ranged from academic, to physical to extracurricular goals.
“This table is just to kickstart the first day of class and Welcome Week for the second semester,” said Raleigh Reed, a junior business administration major from DeFuniak Springs, Florida. “It gives students a good opportunity to think about their goals and what they would like to see themselves accomplish this semester.”
“It’s a big ‘welcome back’ event, just asking students what they’re looking to accomplish this semester,” said Harrison Tapscott, a freshman marketing major from Hartselle, Alabama. “We’re just looking to get people involved.”
The Welcome Week Committee is an organization that holds events at the beginning of each semester. Welcome Week did many events in the first week of last semester, including a movie night, a silent disco and a night out at Camp Butter and Egg.
“They always put on events that help students to make friends and get used to campus again,” said Belle Smith, an elementary education major from Spanish Fort, Alabama. “This semester, they have simpler events just to help people remember the familiarity of it all and still meet new people.”
For this semester, Welcome Week also put on a line dancing night, as well as an event called “Popcorn on the Quad,” where students were able to stop by for popcorn.
Welcome Week also reached out to the Student Government Association and Freshman Forum to help out with this event. Smith and Tapscott are both members of Freshman Forum as part of the Trojan Pride committee.
“We’re all interconnected with each other, and so we all help each other out,” Smith said.
Reed is a senator in SGA, and she serves as the public relations committee’s co-chair.
“I’m so grateful I did SGA because it gives you an opportunity to see campus,” Reed said.
